QUESTION
I begin to write with a slip
of white paper
still by yellow
light screening thoughts of darkness
I can hear
them bumping and tapping
                                                                                      aimlessly
                                                                        eager to touch my longing
sail into my stare
The mood has passed
and I wonder could it ever be a poem
or
does it miss
by the thinness

of a moth’s wing

Refrain
(for Sylvia)

Christmas bleeds down the block
at the Valu Mart while I lag
behind in my shopping, a habit
established in nineteen-fifty-five.

There have been times true gifts
waited on the tip of my tongue,
like proper explanations, so near
to the hearing I refrained from talk.

These approximations,
each reducible to instants,
single memories, single places,
rise, the only responsible gifts

that I can give. And now,
as Christmas sprawls in sparkling pain,
such a moment struggles to depart
with remnant words holy on my tongue.

XYZ UPDATE-1

Xenith, a poem, Self-Consideration, not sure of acceptance; posted Feb 8, 2012, online np; 6/14/20 added to blog:

Self Consideration

I have reached the day

of small triumphs. In spite

of rain, the eagle sits perched

on a high branch of my tree.

Yesterday, and for several days,

a possum lay dead, only to become

my possum by the road.

Now the carcass is gone.

I think my eagle survives

out of my sight and escaping

my memory.

My self considers

whether so many leaves will fall

for me to think more generously

toward the changing season,

whether summer songbirds will return

next year, or if they will have heard

of my greed for wings and songs.

If so, events will not proceed

according to my plan, to my chagrin.

Marvelous Feast

I see the shape of a bird
above the choppy lake,
a heron, slim for shallows and the sleek fish
and I know it drives down and away
the heavy air entire with the sky
and hunger.
I trail its flight
limp as the bobbing legs it tows
and I know what it seeks--the
marvelous feast of the gull
rising with the fish
higher, higher, higher
hungrily keeping prey
and white plume together on this cold air.

After the Earthquake

Richter has been alert,
but you will not find much change
in property--a broken pane,
slight fissures in the wall,
the walk down which you walk
while looking up uneasily.

It is the heart that cracks,
but holds, like ancient porcelain,
its glaze sealing the web of minor flaws;
and the mind reveals its casualty
when the spider steps precariously off

and flings its center to the slowing breeze.

GENERAL NOTICE: ORGANIZING UPDATE 10/10/19

My method has been redesigned.  With each change in publication status, I'll re-issue the alphabetical listing of poems and photos, amending the update number, i.e. update-1 to update-2.  In rare instances there may be a topic outside the summary of my works that I'll post just a matter of interest.  In this process I have deleted most of the earlier posts, so don't be concerned about what happened to them; the information they contained has been incorporated into the alpha updates.  Let me know if you have any issues: Keith Moul, moulpoemsphotos@gmail.com.
