FLORIDA QUARTERLY, poem, Marvelous Feast, Vol.5, No.1, Spring 1972, p.36, print. Collected in my book Beautiful Agitation, from Red Ochre Books, 2012. Out of print but re-printed here:
Marvelous Feast
I see the shape of a bird
above the choppy lake,
a heron, slim for shallows and the sleek fish
and I know it drives down and away
the heavy air entire with the sky
and hunger.
I trail its flight
limp as the bobbing legs it tows
and I know what it seeks--the
marvelous feast of the gull
rising with the fish
higher, higher, higher
hungrily keeping prey
and white plume together on this cold air.

FROM THE GREEN HORSESHOE, POEMS BY JAMES DICKEY'S STUDENTS, After the Earthquake (reprint), U. of South Carolina Press, 1987, p.98 print. Collected in my book Beautiful Agitation from Red Ochre Press, 2012; reprinted several times in various publications, all of which seem unavailable to link. The poem has subsequently been revised for New and Selected Poems: Bones Molder, Words Hold, coming from Duck Lake Books. Here's the poem in its original form:
After the Earthquake
Richter has been alert,
but you will not find much change
in property--a broken pane,
slight fissures in the wall,
the walk down which you walk
while looking up uneasily.
It is the heart that cracks,
but holds, like ancient porcelain,
its glaze sealing the web of minor flaws;
and the mind reveals its casualty
when the spider steps precariously off
and flings its center to the slowing breeze.
