COLORADO REVIEW NORTH, poem Late Night Discussion, Vol.XXVII, Fall 1985, p41 print.  Magazine is defunct.  Collected in my book Beautiful Agitation from Red Ochre Press, 2012, but now also out of print.  Reproduced here:

Late Night Discussion

We time our talk
poorly; meaning slips through
the senses the way rain
slips past roots, by chance,
while the bud withers.

Confusion uses the dark
and breaks sound ideas
into hazardous little pieces,
all pointed and slick
like fish.
Dreams nose
in before we ever truly sleep;
tiny calliopes, hurdy-gurdies,
to distract and spend
our hard-earned progress
for a wink of show:

with our best intentions,
we suffer
for these private flaws

until finally words are useless
(only minutes by the clock)
and we cut into our share
of love, ripe from friction's heat,
for the sustenance
we wanted all along.
